Train Derailment
19yrs old

At 20yrs old, Amie Phares lost her 1st and only child (Iris Phares) due to the Cantara Loop chemical train derailment in 1991.  The chemical meta-sodium seeped into the drinking water in Mt. Shasta where Amie lived.

Because Amie was pregnant at the time, several months later Iris’ passing was in utero.  The railroad company did not recognize her as a living person with victim rights.  Amie and her legal team won the case against the railroad company that Iris Phares had legal rights as an unborn child and damages against the railroad company was awarded.  This case set a precedence against big companies involved in accidents leading to the death of unborn children.

We honor Iris Phares for this unfortunate event, and a mother’s love and dedication to fight and protect her child.  As a result, it led the way for the rights and protection of unborn children.
